When thinking about 2024 design trends we did what we do every year.

We looked to the design gurus to guide us to the latest trends and concepts to help us keep our renovations modern and fresh.

This year it was Vogue Living, ABI, Homes to Love, and Home Beautiful.

While it is good to stay up to date for our own personal satisfaction, it is important if you are a renovator for profit to remember that the general public may not be as sophisticated with their design preferences so you must use caution when implementing these ideas into your projects.

E.g. If you have installed a waterfall island bench into every project for the last decade, you can be tempted to opt for an edgier profile.

In some areas, this will be embraced but in others, the waterfall still reigns supreme and you can end up sabotaging your profit plan with a feature that doesn’t excite your buyer. In renovating for profit it’s essential to obsess over: “Knowing your market”.

The Shift From Open-Plan To Defined Spaces

I didn’t think we would ever see the day when an open plan wasn’t a thing but it is definitely coming Vogue Living, ABI Interiors both speak to a growing desire for specialized areas within a home.

Renovators can capitalize on this trend by creating area zones, dedicated workspaces or cozy reading nooks, dining and entertaining areas that cater to modern lifestyles while adding functional appeal.

This is not to say the open plan is “out”. As I mentioned in the intro, often our target market can hang onto trends for longer than the professionals so it is important to be in touch with where they are at.

The upside is that it gives us more flexibility to work with the existing fabric of a home.

Colour Drenching – A Bold Statement

This is another strong theme amongst the design pros. Immersing a room in varying shades of a single colour can add dimension and depth to the home.

“I predict that we will see the popular ‘beige-fluencer’ earthy aesthetic merge with bright colours for a more relaxed and playful  ‘lived-in’ look,” says Lauren.Li, principal of Sisalla Interior Design.

This is a trend that will serve you well in your profitable renovations. Using rich, cohesive colour palettes can define spaces and create a striking visual impact. Layering hues and even playing with warm and cool hues can create an interesting look, potentially attracting buyers looking for a unique and modern home aesthetic.

Colour Drenching – A Bold Statement

Using eco-friendly materials and natural finishes not only appeals to environmentally conscious buyers but also adds a timeless quality to the property. This approach ensures that the renovations remain relevant and appealing for years to come it is a consistent theme across several of our reference publications and it is a trend that we are fully on board with.

The goal is definitely to buy quality for the long term. While you may have budget restrictions, reusing existing materials and introducing preloved items are usually very budget-friendly.

We are currently renovating our own home, We last renovated a decade ago. That original renovation was a cheap and cheerful reno to rent the property, we did purchase quality Caroma sanitary ware which will be retained and re-used in this renovation.

It is a significant saving to us and more importantly, it means a reduction in our contribution to landfill.

Cafécore – Bringing The Bistro Home

Cafécore is a concept introduced to us by ABI and I have to say I love it. It brings the essence of café culture into the home.

This style is perfect for creating inviting kitchen nooks or small, informal dining areas.

For renovators, it means investing in quality coffee machines, open shelving, and comfortable seating (possibly a banquette) to craft a space that appeals particularly Gen Y and Gen Z for a relaxed conversation area.

I follow a TikToker Loan Fox who completed an awesome cafe bar in his mid-century modern renovation. You can check it out here and I hope you love it as much as I do.

Horsing Around

Over the past few years, we have had a steady parade of fauna through our interiors such from highland cows to Australian Native birds.

Now we have horses! The equestrian influence incorporates leather accents, horse-themed artwork, and classic furniture.

It can infuse a sense of the English country club which can be appropriate for renos in the southern highlands or the Macedon ranges.

In fact, I did spy a horse cushion in the home of one of our students in Woodend last week.

Moody Oceanic Hues

The typical coastal pallet of pale blue-greens, sand, and white has finally had its day, making way for a deeper coastal aesthetic according to Abi Interiors. It reflects the ocean’s depths through the use of dark blues, turquoise, reflective surfaces, and organic shapes create a unique enigmatic atmosphere. This scheme is particularly effective in bathrooms and living areas greeting a restful, sanctuary-like ambiance.
