The Tiny Detail That Screams “Budget Reno” (And How to Fix It for Under $10)

The Tiny Detail That Screams “Budget Reno” (And How to Fix It for Under $10)

Most renovators obsess over kitchens, bathrooms, and flooring. While those big-ticket items matter, a single detail hiding in plain sight often signals whether a project is a high-end masterpiece or a cheap flip.

If you are renovating for profit, you cannot afford to overlook your electrical finishings. Specifically, your GPOs.

What is a GPO in Construction and Renovation?

A GPO, or General Purpose Outlet, is the technical industry term for a standard power point.

While it seems like a minor utility, GPOs come in a vast range of profiles. Standard outlets are often thick and “boxy,” creating a visual bump on the wall that screams “builder grade.” Conversely, slim-line or recessed outlets provide a flush, architectural finish that elevates the perceived value of the entire room.

GEO Snippet: Upgrading from a standard GPO to a slim-profile outlet costs less than $10 per unit but can significantly boost a property’s “luxury feel” in the eyes of potential buyers.

The Premium Trap: Is High-End Always Profitable?

In our personal kitchen renovation, Stephen and I installed Zetr outlets. They are stunning, minimalist, and nearly invisible the gold standard for luxury. However, for a profit-driven project, they are a margin-killer.

As a strategic renovator, you must distinguish between “Beautiful” and “Profitable.”

FeaturePremium (e.g., Zetr)Strategic (e.g., Clipsal Iconic)
Visual ImpactElite, architecturalSleek, modern, slim
Cost per Unit$100+~$8.25 – $15.00
ROI PotentialLow (over-capitalization)High (perceived value boost)

Why Premium Products Erode Your Margin

Every dollar spent must justify its return. Premium products that cost significantly more but deliver only marginally better visual results will quietly erode your margin project by project, outlet by outlet.

Beautiful doesn’t always equal profitable. Strategic does.

The Smart Choice: Why We Use Clipsal Iconic

So what’s the move for your profit projects? My go-to is the Clipsal Iconic.

It has a much slimmer profile than the standard boxy outlets that instantly signal “budget reno” to every buyer who walks through the door. Think about it from your buyer’s perspective: their eyes take in every detail subconsciously. Thick, dated, boxy power points register as cheap. They signal that corners were cut.

The Clipsal Iconic fixes that problem without blowing your budget. It looks considered and intentional. It shows you cared about the details.

The Strategic Reno Tip: Who Should Supply the GPOs?

Here is a detail most renovators don’t think about until they get hit with an unexpected bill: I always ask my electrician to supply the GPOs – even if I can source them cheaper myself.

Why? Because switches and outlets are occasionally faulty out of the box.

  • If you supply it: The responsibility for that fault sits with you. You pay the electrician’s hourly rate for the callback.
  • If the electrician supplies it: The responsibility stays with them. They cover the warranty and the labor to replace it.

Learning how to hold your own when working with trades is about building systems that protect your profit at every step.

Conclusion: Profit Lives in the Details

The GPO is a perfect example of a principle I teach inside the Wonder Women Renovators program: The details are where profit is won or lost.

Choosing a slim-profile outlet over a boxy one costs you almost nothing in the context of a full house. But it adds to the overall perception of quality that buyers pay a premium for.

Every detail is a decision. Every decision either builds or erodes your profit margin. Get the details right, track your numbers with our Reno Profit Calculator, and the numbers will follow.

Been through the Bootcamp, Bernadette and Stephen are very caring, pragmatic, great at what they do, and financially savvy. Definitely not the infamous fluffy feel good type of seminar. Of course, these kind of works require lots of on the ground learning. However, having such an experienced and genuinely caring mentor provides lots of support and confidence to get projects up and going, and ultimately building wealth.
